This is the demonstrative pronoun used to identify the noun. It describes something that is here or nearby ("This ball I am holding is red." or "This is my home."). A very easy way you can tell if someone is using this the right way is if you can point to an object that ay are talking about, like if someone says "this computer is mine," you should be able to point to the computer, and it does not matter if the computer (a noun) is in the room or in the picture. Another way to tell is if, after ay say "this computer is mine," that you don't go, "Which computer?" or "What computer?"
