A king is the male who rules the country because of inheritance. A king usually comes to power when one of his parents dies. For much of history most countries were governed in this way, especially in Europe. In some countries people elected the new king from candidates.

The wife of the king is called the queen. A woman who becomes the monarch because of inheritance is also called the queen.

If the country has the king or the queen, that means it is the monarchy. A country which the king or queen rules is called the kingdom.
